In-hours, standard prices including VAT, from 2 practices that already publish; not a UK average. We show a range once 3 practices list a price and a median once 5 do. Fewer than 3 practices list a price for a cat or all pets so far.
What it is
The CMA's definition of this item covers a consultation or clinical examination by a vet, the vaccine given by a vet or a registered veterinary nurse, and completing the vaccination certificate (Explanatory Note, Annex 1). It adds that the price is "inclusive of all core vaccines".
Official price-list name: Vaccinations booster (including consultation)
(CMA Order, Schedule 1).
What's included
- Anything that is an essential part of the service, and VAT (Art. 7(2)(d) and (f))
The three vaccination items
All three vaccination items carry the words "including consultation" in their official names, so each listed price should cover the consultation that goes with the jab, not the vaccine alone. A primary course and a booster are separate items, and kennel cough has its own line.
- Vaccination primary course (inc. consultation)
- Vaccination booster (inc. consultation)
- Kennel cough vaccination (inc. consultation)

Why the price varies
- The vaccine mix that year. See above: some years' boosters contain more vaccines.
- Missed boosters. PDSA says a cat that misses a booster may need to restart its primary course, depending on how overdue it is, which moves you to the primary course price.
- Who owns the practice. The CMA found that between January 2023 and July 2024, average prices at five of the six large vet groups were together 18.3% higher than at independent practices for consultations, treatments and medicines (final report summary, paragraph 25).
- Care plans. The CMA found that the large groups' standard plans always included an annual vaccination (final report Appendix G, paragraph 1.5).
Background
Boosters are not the same every year. PDSA says dogs need leptospirosis yearly but distemper, parvovirus and hepatitis every three years, and that a cat's boosters are every one to three years depending on the vaccine (PDSA, April 2022). So the same pet's booster can cost more in some years than others.
Questions to ask the practice
- Which vaccines are in this year's booster for my pet?
- Does the price change in years when more vaccines are due?
- How late can a booster be before you would charge for a new primary course?
We explain prices, not treatment. Ask your vet about the clinical choices for your own pet.
The rules
What the practice's price list must show, with the Order's article references
The exact name from Schedule 1, “Vaccinations booster (including consultation)”, with no free-text description (Art. 7(2)(a)).
As for every item: each version on its own line with the standard one marked, a cat price and five dog bands where the price depends on the animal, and VAT included, kept up to date and changed before a higher price is charged (Art. 7(2)(b), (c), (f) and (g), and 7(5)).
Large vet groups must publish from 23 December 2026 and smaller practices from 23 March 2027 (Art. 3 and 7).

Questions
Is kennel cough included in a dog's booster?
Not on the standard list. "Vaccination for kennel cough (including consultation)" is a separate item.
Is the booster cheaper on a pet care plan?
It may be included. Whether the plan saves money overall depends on what else you use; the CMA found the average subscriber saved on about half of the large groups' top-selling plans (Appendix G, paragraph 1.13).
Why might my bill be higher than the listed price?
Listed prices are for the typical case. Each price list must say so, and must warn that prices may go up in more complex or complicated cases (Art. 7(2)(l)). The price must still include anything that is an essential part of the service (Art. 7(2)(d)).
How up to date are the prices here?
Every price shows the date we last checked it and links to the practice's own page. We re-check weekly, and daily from 23 to 31 December 2026. If a price looks wrong, email [email protected].
