Animal health certificate prices at UK vets

The document your pet needs to travel from Great Britain to an EU country.

Published prices

No practice on our list publishes this price yet: vet businesses with 15 or more practices or out-of-hours centres must publish it, if they offer it, on each practice's website from 23 December 2026, and smaller practices from 23 March 2027.

What it is

The CMA's definition covers a consultation or clinical examination by a vet and preparing and completing the certificate (Explanatory Note, Annex 1).

Official price-list name: Animal health certificate (CMA Order, Schedule 1).

What's included

  • Schedule 1 asks practices to show, next to this price, any charges for additional animals included on the same certificate.
  • Anything that is an essential part of the service, and VAT (Art. 7(2)(d) and (f))

Why the price varies

  • Extra pets. Schedule 1 asks practices to show, next to this price, any charges for additional animals on the same certificate.
  • What is already done. Rabies vaccination is not one of the 36 standard items, so it is priced separately. GOV.UK says the microchip must go in before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination, and that the pet must wait at least 21 full days after the first rabies vaccination (or the last of the first course) before travelling.
  • Who owns the practice. The CMA found that between January 2023 and July 2024, average prices at five of the six large vet groups were together 18.3% higher than at independent practices for consultations, treatments and medicines (final report summary, paragraph 25).

Background

GOV.UK says a certificate is valid for 10 days for entry into the EU and for 6 months for onward travel in the EU and for re-entry to Great Britain, and that you need a new one for each separate trip. Your pet must be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies first.

Questions to ask the practice

  • What is the charge for each additional pet on the same certificate?
  • Is the rabies vaccination priced separately, and when should it be done?
  • How far ahead of travel should I book the certificate appointment?

We explain prices, not treatment. Ask your vet about the clinical choices for your own pet.

The rules

What the practice's price list must show, with the Order's article references

The exact name from Schedule 1, “Animal health certificate”, with no free-text description (Art. 7(2)(a)).

As for every item: each version on its own line with the standard one marked, a cat price and five dog bands where the price depends on the animal, and VAT included, kept up to date and changed before a higher price is charged (Art. 7(2)(b), (c), (f) and (g), and 7(5)).

Any charges for additional animals included on the same certificate (Schedule 1).

Large vet groups must publish from 23 December 2026 and smaller practices from 23 March 2027 (Art. 3 and 7).

Questions

Do I need a new certificate for every trip?

Yes. GOV.UK says you need a new animal health certificate for each separate trip to the EU.

Is the rabies vaccine included?

Not as standard. Rabies vaccination is not one of the 36 items on the CMA price list; ask the practice for its price.

Why might my bill be higher than the listed price?

Listed prices are for the typical case. Each price list must say so, and must warn that prices may go up in more complex or complicated cases (Art. 7(2)(l)). The price must still include anything that is an essential part of the service (Art. 7(2)(d)).

How up to date are the prices here?

Every price shows the date we last checked it and links to the practice's own page. We re-check weekly, and daily from 23 to 31 December 2026. If a price looks wrong, email [email protected].
